Born in 1972 in Burdwan, West Bengal, H.R. Das’ works are inspired by Hindu mythology, the Bull or Nandi plays a prominent part in his paintings. Vibrant and dominant, his bulls are full of character that give his paintings a powerful feel. Das has a distinctly unique style of representing the common Nandi. His bulls dance with joy and pulsate a gleeful, carefree energy. Another distinct characteristic of Das’ work is his focus on the background. Das spends as much time designing the stage on which his characters perform. They may recede and be dismissed as props, but his backgrounds still command attention, the intricate tapestry effect and mute lines provide a vibrant milieu that serve to highlight the interactions between the main players of his magnum opus.
